Verdict to imprison a former minister in Burkina Faso in embezzlement case

Khaberni  - A court in Burkina Faso issued prison sentences against several defendants in the case known in the media as "Ye Yaki Kameel and others," which was prominent in local public opinion due to its association with financial corruption and money laundering. After 11 days of hearings, the court convicted several defendants in a case estimated to involve around 115 million African Francs (about $187,000).

The former minister Laur Zongo Hien was sentenced to 5 years effective imprisonment and a fine of 10 million African Francs (about $16,000), with an arrest warrant issued despite her being in the hospital since March 24th. The main defendant, Ye Yaki Kameel, received an 11-year effective prison sentence and a substantial fine of 462.8 million African Francs (about $753,000), the severest penalty in this case. Sentences ranging from 5 years, financial penalties, and acquittals were also issued to the other defendants in this case.

The case is linked to another file concerning the defendant Amadou Tignan, relating to alleged embezzlement exceeding 3 billion African Francs (about $4.8 million), reflecting the magnitude of the challenges faced by the authorities in combating economic crimes.

This case enjoys widespread attention from the public in Burkina Faso, and the verdict comes within the context of an official campaign to enhance the fight against corruption and financial crimes, in a country striving to ensure transparency and accountability in state institutions.
