Khaberni - The Jordanian child Hamza Suleiman, from the area of Sahab, died after being bitten by an unknown insect a few days ago, showing severe convulsions and acute breathing difficulties.
According to experts' estimates in the field of entomology, it is believed that the cause is due to a bite by what is known as the "Black Tiger Sand Fly".
What is the sand fly?
The sand fly, or "phlebotomine sand fly," is a small insect not exceeding 3 mm in length, colored yellow or light brown, and covered with fine hairs. It is active at night and lives in humid and dark areas such as old houses, farms, and under trees.
The females feed on the blood of humans and animals, and transmit dangerous parasites such as Leishmania (cutaneous and visceral) which can lead to deadly diseases, especially among children and the ill. It has also been observed to possibly relate to dengue fever and other viral diseases in some regions.
Symptoms:
Symptoms of a sand fly bite include fever, skin ulcers, convulsions, shortness of breath, and muscle pain. It is particularly dangerous for children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.
Prevention:
For prevention, it is recommended to avoid sleeping or sitting in damp or dark places without protection, using mosquito nets, and wearing long clothes, especially in agricultural or open areas.
