No Electricity without Planting Trees A New Requirement in a Saudi Province for Licensing Homes

Khaberni - The Al-Ahsa Municipality in the Saudi province of Al-Ahsa has approved a strategic initiative that requires the owners of new homes to plant three trees as a fundamental condition for issuing an electricity connection license, a decision aimed at accelerating the increase in vegetation cover and integrating environmental responsibility into urban development in the province.

This innovative initiative, which directly affects the lives of the citizens, represents a qualitative leap in efforts to enhance the urban landscape, whereby tree planting projects are no longer limited to streets and public parks but have extended to include every new home, thus turning citizens into active partners in achieving the goals of the “Green Saudi” initiative.

The official spokesperson for the Al-Ahsa Municipality, Khalid Bouwshel, explained that the new mechanism is characterized by simplicity and effectiveness, as the municipality is responsible for providing the necessary seedlings to citizens after submitting an electronic request, which ensures the unification of efforts and providing the necessary support to make the initiative successful on a wide scale.

This decision is supported by the huge productive capacities of the central nursery affiliated with the municipality, which has recently succeeded in doubling its production capacity to reach two million seasonal flower seedlings and 125,000 perennial plants annually.

The nursery extends over an area of 500,000 square meters, and operates according to an integrated environmental and productive system that relies on the latest technologies in environmental control and water treatment to ensure the sustainability and quality of production.

The municipality did not stop at this requirement but launched it as part of a comprehensive package of environmental initiatives, which included intensifying tree planting activities in roads, parks, and infrastructure projects, supporting schools, mosques, and government sectors with trees, in addition to launching the “We Plant for You” initiative, which allows citizens to request tree planting in front of their homes through an online platform.

Through these comprehensive efforts, the Al-Ahsa Municipality aims to achieve a sustainable green environment and improve the quality of life for residents, aligning with the ambitious aspirations of Saudi Vision 2030 in environmental development and building vibrant and prosperous cities.
