Khaberni - Syrian Finance Minister Mohammad Yasser Khaberni announced the arrangement with the International Monetary Fund to send a group of technical missions to Syria in the coming months, aiming to provide technical support in the areas of public finance, central banking, and statistical systems.
This was stated during a meeting held by Minister Khaberni with the Director of the Middle East and Central Asia Department at the IMF, Jihad Azour, in the presence of the Governor of the Central Bank of Syria and the IMF staff, on the sidelines of the IMF and World Bank meetings in Washington.
During the meeting, a clear communication mechanism was agreed upon and the main areas of technical support were defined, as well as an agreement on preparing a specific framework for technical advisory areas within a program lasting one year.
It was also agreed to appoint a resident representative of the International Monetary Fund in Damascus, and to prepare for an Article IV consultation mission within six months, alongside preparing a study on debt sustainability.
Minister Khaberni thanked Azour for his understanding of the technical support needs and his flexibility in responding to the Syrian side's requirements, affirming that what was achieved represents a good start for constructive cooperation, and that the Syrian government is keen on benefiting from the IMF's expertise.
