Khaberni - The Secretary-General of the Ministry of Local Administration, Nidal Adwan, announced the establishment of 20 shelters distributed throughout Jordan, aimed at reducing the spread of stray dogs.
Adwan told "Al-Mamlaka" channel that the ministry will work on preparing these shelters to treat dogs, perform necessary surgeries, and provide required vaccinations to mitigate their aggression towards citizens.
The Prime Minister, Jafar Hassan, directed the preparation of a national plan to address the phenomenon of stray dogs, according to the Minister of Local Administration, Walid Al-Masri, who stated that he formed a committee of ministers and the Mayor of Amman.
Al-Masri, during a meeting held in the House of Representatives with the Labor and Population Committee and several chairpersons, dedicated to discussing the phenomenon of the spread of stray dogs and its effects on citizens, and discussing practical solutions to ensure their safety and reduce health and social risks arising from this phenomenon, said that the plan begins with establishing 20 shelters for dogs outside the cities, with the number later increasing to 50 shelters in successive phases.
He added that the next phase of the plan would include sterilization, vaccination, and the segregation between males and females to reduce breeding, emphasizing that the government will work on securing the necessary funding for the project despite its high cost, even if it requires redirecting financial allocations from other items.
He pointed out that the phenomenon of stray dogs in Jordan did not exist before 2020, indicating that their number today exceeds the number of sheep in Jordan, saying, "I am certain that the number of stray dogs has surpassed one million dogs."
The Minister of Environment, Ayman Suleiman, said that a practical solution to reduce the phenomenon consists in establishing fortified shelters designated for housing stray dogs, where they are fed and cared for within safe areas, noting that there are successful experiences in the governorates of Aqaba and Madaba that can be built upon.
Suleiman clarified that separating males from females is one of the most practical steps to reduce the number of stray dogs.
He indicated that the project requires at least 3 years to achieve noticeable results in reducing their numbers in preparation for releasing them in a controlled environment.
