Khaberni - The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced an urgent recall of "Wise Wave" brand cinnamon powder after it was found to contain dangerous levels of lead.
Lead is known as a heavy metal associated with serious health issues including developmental disorders, neurological diseases, and some types of cancer, as well as a possible link to autism spectrum disorder.
SLR Food Distribution, based in New York, announced the immediate withdrawal of the products from the market, after tests carried out by the Food and Drug Administration revealed lead content exceeding the permissible limits.
The packages were distributed in several states, including New Jersey, New York, Florida, Connecticut, Maryland, Minnesota, Oklahoma, and Ohio, between February 15 last year and June 28.
The recalled products have a capacity of 50 grams, in clear plastic packages with black lids, and bear the reference number 0 688474 302853.
So far, no confirmed poisoning cases have been recorded, but the Food and Drug Administration warned that even small amounts of lead could cause symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and fatigue.
It added that chronic exposure could lead to serious damage including developmental disorders in children and long-term neurological problems, in addition to effects on the kidneys and increased blood pressure in adults.
Experts explained that lead accumulates in the blood and vital organs such as the kidneys, liver, and lungs, and can cause permanent damage to the central nervous system, especially in children, leading to learning difficulties and developmental defects.
Research has also indicated that prolonged exposure to lead is linked with an increased likelihood of developing autism spectrum disorder.
The causes of the cinnamon contamination with lead are not clear, but authorities have pointed to several possibilities, including the natural presence of lead in the soil where spices are cultivated, its deliberate addition for commercial purposes, or its use as a coloring agent to create a more appealing look.
The Food and Drug Administration has urged consumers who purchased these products to return the packages to the purchase location for a full refund.
