Benefits of Citrus Scents for the Nervous System

Khaberni - Dr. Yekaterina Sergeyeva indicates that inhaling citrus scents can decrease stress levels through their impact on the nervous system.
She says: "When inhaling citrus scents, the molecules of essential compounds, especially limonene, stimulate the olfactory receptors in the nose, which send an immediate signal to the limbic system in the brain, responsible for emotions and memory, which in turn reduces the activity of the pituitary-adrenal axis, leading to decreased production of cortisol and adrenaline".

According to her, the highest effect is observed with lemon and orange, as they contain the highest concentration of limonene compound. Grapefruit also has an effect, although its scent is often refreshing.

The doctor notes that to achieve this effect, one should inhale citrus scent for 5-10 minutes, taking deep and calm breaths. This method can be used as a daily means of relieving stress, for example, in the morning or before sleep.

According to her, there is no significant difference between the scent of fresh fruit and natural essential oils, but the effect of the oils is more consistent. However, synthetic fragrances do not have a similar effect, so aroma therapy should only be used if there is no allergy.
