Khaberni - US President Donald Trump escalated his positions towards Iran and Lebanon, revealing in an interview with “Fox News” that he is approaching the transfer of the “Hezbollah” dossier to Syria and granting a larger role to Syrian President Ahmad Al-Shara in handling this file, calling on Tehran to stop what he described as “its proxies in Lebanon” from causing disturbances.
In notable positions, Trump expressed his disappointment with Israel, considering that it “cannot do anything without demolishing buildings in Lebanon”, in direct criticism of the recent Israeli military operations.
On another note, Trump revealed that he spoke with Iranian officials last night, warning them against closing the Strait of Hormuz, and emphasizing that any such move would have serious repercussions.
He stated that Iranian negotiators “will not be able to return to their country” if Iran proceeds to close the strait, adding that the United States might impose fees on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz if no agreement is reached with Tehran.
Trump indicated that Washington might take control of the Strait of Hormuz if forced to do so, noting that the United States could become “the guardian angel” of the strait and secure 20 percent of the oil passing through it.
He also warned that closing the Strait of Hormuz could lead to “the annihilation of Iran”, as he put it, affirming that the current focus should be on reaching an agreement with Iran, and considering that Hamas currently does not pose the main problem in Gaza.
These statements come at a time when American-Iranian negotiations continue in Switzerland, amid international efforts to consolidate the ceasefire in Lebanon and address unresolved regional issues, notably the situation on the Lebanese front and the future of security understandings in the region.
