Security Condition Determines Irans Stance on the 2026 World Cup

Khaberni - The Iranian authorities announced that the national team's participation in the 2026 World Cup finals will remain conditional on providing full security guarantees for the players during their stay in the United States.

The "Tasnim" agency reported that the Iranian Minister of Sports, Ahmad Donya Mali, confirmed that the team will head to the tournament if the safety of their delegation is guaranteed, adding that the final decision on participation will remain in the hands of the government and the Supreme National Security Council of the country.

Mahdi Taj, the president of the Iranian Football Federation, had previously hinted at boycotting the United States without ruling out participation in the World Cup, suggesting the possibility of moving the team's matches to Mexico, which was later rejected by FIFA.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Sports had previously indicated in early March that the appropriate conditions for the team's participation in the tournament were not met, attributing this to the political tensions between Tehran and Washington.

The tournament draw placed Iran in Group Seven alongside Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand, with the team scheduled to play their matches in Los Angeles and Seattle, in the tournament to be held between June 11 and July 19, 2026.
