A Peculiar Coffee Recipe Sparks Widespread Controversy

Khaberni - A strange and unique drink has achieved great popularity on social platforms, described as the "best coffee in the world", represented by "egg coffee" from Vietnam, which first appeared more than 80 years ago.

This coffee is made by whipping egg yolks with sugar and condensed milk, then pouring this sweet mixture over strong Vietnamese coffee, making its taste just like a dessert, and some compare it to marshmallow.
The origin of this drink goes back to the city of Hanoi in the 1940s, and it is called in Vietnamese "cà phê trứng", meaning "egg coffee". The beverage has other versions in different cultures; for example, in Italy, there is an older drink called "zabaglione" which is made by whipping egg yolks with sugar and served alongside coffee.

The widespread dissemination of this drink on social media platforms can be traced back to an Instagram video uploaded last February, which garnered over 400,000 likes.

Commentators were divided between enthusiastic supporters and strong opponents. One of them wrote: "the best coffee in the world," while another commented: "I made it, and it's wonderful." However, others expressed disgust or fear; one wrote: "It tastes like salmonella" and another said: "It looks disgusting".

Dr. Sujatha Reddy, a physician from Georgia, warns that the egg yolks are not fully cooked during the whipping process, increasing the risk of contamination with salmonella bacteria, which are only killed by completely cooking the eggs.

Salmonella symptoms include diarrhea, fever, stomach cramps, nausea, and vomiting, with pregnant women and the elderly being most susceptible to its serious risks.

From a nutritional standpoint, Dr. Reddy confirms that there is no difference in protein quality between raw and cooked eggs, but consuming raw eggs may reduce the body’s ability to absorb certain B vitamins such as biotin. Additionally, adding condensed milk makes the beverage very high in calories.

Reddy advises that if raw eggs must be consumed, it is better to use pasteurized eggs in their shells, ultimately confirming that the risks of this beverage outweigh the benefits for her.
