5 killed by armed gunman who took hostages in Kyiv

Khaberni  - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the killing of at least 5 people after a gunman opened fire and took hostages in a store in Kyiv, while the Ukrainian Interior Minister confirmed the death of the suspect during his attempt to fortify himself.

Zelensky, on Saturday evening, commenting on the platform "X": "The death of 5 people has been confirmed. There are currently 10 people being treated in the hospital for injuries and shock," also confirming the rescue of 4 hostages.

A video published today Saturday on the platform "X" shows an armed man running in the middle of the road and firing at some pedestrians before entering a building.

Following the incident, special Ukrainian forces were deployed at the site, where they imposed a tight security cordon around the store and the streets leading to it.

Conversely, Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko stated on the "Telegram" platform that the toll of dead and injured in this attack, which took place in the Holosiivskyi district in downtown Kyiv, "is still under investigation."

He confirmed the death of the gunman who opened fire, noting that special police forces killed him today Saturday in the Holosiivskyi district in downtown Kyiv, before he could fortify himself inside one of the stores.

This incident comes amid the ongoing exchange of gunfire between Russia and Ukraine without reaching a ceasefire.

Continuation of the fighting

Ukraine launched a drone attack last Friday evening on a number of Russian oil facilities, including two oil refineries in the Samara region and an oil depot in the Crimea peninsula and a port on the Baltic Sea dedicated to exporting oil products, according to Russian and Ukrainian official sources.

This comes amidst continued Russian missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian cities.

The Ukrainian authorities reported last Friday that the Russian army launched an attack targeting the city of Chernihiv in the north of the country, causing severe damage to the energy sector.

Russian attacks also resulted in the deaths of at least 15 people last Thursday, according to Ukrainian officials.

Since February 24, 2022, Russia has launched a military attack on Ukraine, conditioning its end on Kyiv's renunciation of joining NATO, which Kyiv considers interference in its affairs, and Kyiv responded by launching counterattacks on Russia.
