Champions League Atlético relies on its fans to prevent Barcelonas comeback

Khaberni - Atlético Madrid hosts its local rival Barcelona, which is seeking a continental "remontada," on Tuesday in the second leg of the quarter-finals of the Champions League. Atlético enters the match with the advantage of winning the first leg by two goals, which positions Diego Simeone’s team on the threshold of reaching the semi-final.

The winner between Atlético and Barcelona will face the winner from Arsenal and Sporting Lisbon.

The first leg at the Camp Nou stadium saw a dramatic turn when the young defender Pau Torres received a straight red card in the 44th minute, a numerical disadvantage that Atlético capitalized on.

Although Atlético Madrid entered the first leg after three consecutive defeats, the team's character in major appointments was clearly visible, granting them a huge tactical and psychological edge before the return clash.

Atlético Madrid lost 2-1 to Sevilla in the league at the beginning of the week, while Barcelona won 4-1 against Espanyol to extend their lead to nine points ahead of Real Madrid at the top of the standings.

Atlético has a formidable record at its home ground this season, achieving six consecutive victories before their recent league stumble, and has failed to score at home in only one match throughout the season. Nevertheless, the memory of being eliminated by Borussia Dortmund in the 2023-2024 season after winning the first leg remains a concern that Simeone tries to avoid, while it represents a glimmer of hope for Barcelona in the possibility of turning the tables.

In contrast, German coach Hansi Flick realizes that Tuesday's match is the most crucial of Barcelona's season so far, and that returning with a win requires maximum offensive effectiveness and calm defense to avoid repeating the dismissal scenario that disrupted the team's plans in the first leg.

Barcelona successfully defeated Atlético in Madrid at the beginning of this month, but the Madrid fans still remember the crushing 4-0 victory in the King's Cup last February, which boosts the confidence of the home team in their ability to protect their lead.
