Jordan Social Security Law Amendments Based on International Study to Ensure Sustainability

Khaberni - Shaman Al-Majali, the spokesperson for the Social Security Corporation, said on Sunday that the Social Security bill was based on an actuarial study conducted by the International Labour Organization, in cooperation with an international expert from the organization.

Al-Majali explained that although the proposed amendments are severe, they are considered the optimal solution to ensure the sustainability of the institution, emphasizing that the sustainability of the security directly affects all beneficiaries, and contributes to enabling the institution to meet its future commitments, adding: "If sustainability is not achieved, we will not fulfill our commitments."

He mentioned that discussions of the bill in the Jordanian House of Representatives reached article (62), where the parliamentary labor committee proposed amendments to articles (62) and (64), including an increase in the benefit factor from 2.5% to 2.75% for members whose salaries are less than 400 dinars.

Al-Majali indicated that the number of members whose salaries are less than 400 dinars exceeds 500,000 members, making these amendments have a direct impact on the financial position of the institution, emphasizing the need to consult the actuarial expert to achieve a balanced formula, with the final decision resting with the House of Representatives.

He added that the parliamentary labor committee showed understanding for the government's viewpoint that the proposals need further study, and to return with clear results before making any decision.

He also noted that the most significant discussed amendments included expanding the coverage of the social security and opening the ceiling of the wage subject to deduction, alongside other regulatory and structural adjustments.

In turn, Minister of Labor Khaled Al-Bakkar affirmed that the government looks with interest at the proposals of the parliamentary labor committee, praising its efforts chaired by the deputy
