Mandatory Service in Israel Debate Over Extension and Reserve Law

Khaberni - The Israeli military announced that the Chief of Staff did not support any specific conscription law but emphasized the need for legislation that meets the urgent operational needs of the military.

During cabinet discussions, the Chief of Staff warned that starting from January 2027, the duration of mandatory service is expected to decrease to 30 months.

He explained that this reduction in troop numbers, along with the increasing tasks assigned to the military, would put significant and unreasonable pressure on reserve soldiers.

For this reason, the Chief of Staff called for a comprehensive legislative solution that includes extending the duration of mandatory service to 36 months, amending the reserve service law, and creating a new framework that allows for an increase in the number of military recruits to keep up with expanded tasks.

The Israeli military confirmed in its statement that it will continue to present its professional requirements at the political level.
