A Notable Choice for Jordan What Does This Move Mean for the Climate File

Khaberni - Dr. Ayman Sulaiman, the Minister of Environment, said that Jordan's selection as the headquarters for the regional office of the Green Climate Fund is an important national achievement and a regional responsibility, confirming that this step contributes to enhancing access to climate financing for countries in the region, and supports capacity building and knowledge exchange, in addition to accelerating the implementation of joint projects to address climate challenges, with water scarcity and enhancing renewable energy projects at the forefront.
He added that this achievement comes within the framework of the supreme royal vision of His Majesty King Abdullah II, which emphasizes the importance of integrating international efforts to address climate change and enhance collective action based on climate justice and support for the most affected states, and reflects the active role of His Royal Highness Prince Hussein the Crown Prince, in pushing towards adopting innovative and sustainable solutions and enhancing youth participation and empowerment in climate action, alongside the continuous directives of the government to accelerate the implementation of national programs and enhance international partnerships in this area.
He pointed out that Jordan hosting this office represents an important milestone in the Kingdom's journey towards enhancing climate action regionally and internationally, and reflects the international confidence in the role it plays in supporting environmental efforts and achieving sustainable development, explaining that the Kingdom will work through this office to enhance regional partnerships and coordinate efforts between states and implement joint climate programs and initiatives that contribute to supporting the region's priorities and enhancing its capacity to adapt to the effects of climate change.
He also confirmed that this achievement represents a message of hope, cooperation, and progress for the entire region, noting that the Kingdom will continue to work with a spirit of responsibility and transparency to be the voice of the region in international forums, and contribute to supporting global efforts to address climate change and build a more sustainable future.
In a related context, the Green Climate Fund announced the establishment of a new regional office in Amman, where Jordan is the first Arab country to host a regional office of the fund, enhancing its status as a regional climate action hub, particularly in the fields of climate adaptation and natural resource management.
Secretary of the fund, Artur Cardoso de La Cerda, confirmed that this step represents an important milestone in the development journey of the fund and reflects the direction towards enhancing field presence, pointing out that expanding regional spread will contribute to accelerating project development, enhancing partnerships, and achieving a greater impact on the ground.
For her part, Maysoun Al-Zoubi, the director of the BRCCJ project, said that Amman hosting the regional office, which covers Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and the Middle East, constitutes a strategic achievement that will support vital sectors, especially the agricultural sector, noting that this step will positively reflect on existing projects through facilitating access to financing and enhancing technical support, contributing to improving the efficiency of adapting to climate change challenges.
