Zakat The Spirit of Solidarity and the Basis of Stability in Society
Author: الدكتور زيد احمد المحيسن

Zakat is considered one of the greatest legislations in Islam, as it is not only legislated as a financial worship but also as a human and social system aimed at achieving balance among the members of society. It is a sincere expression of the spirit of mercy and solidarity, and a practical means to anchor the values of justice and equality among people. The Holy Quran has affirmed the status of zakat by making it a known right in the wealth of the rich to be given to the deserving groups, thus serving as a bridge between the capable and the needy, and transforming religious feeling into concrete humanitarian action to alleviate the suffering of the poor and give them hope and dignity.
The importance of zakat to an individual is evident in that it purifies the soul from selfishness and stinginess, and instills in the heart the values of giving and sensitivity towards others, and it also grants money blessing and growth because it is based on the principle of sharing and responsibility. At the level of society, zakat represents an effective tool for enhancing social solidarity and strengthening the bonds among its members, as it reduces economic disparities and helps alleviate poverty and need, contributing to creating an environment characterized by cooperation and compassion. When the needy feel that society has not abandoned them, and that they have a preserved share in the wealth of the capable, a sense of belonging and security is generated, which positively reflects on social stability.
From here, zakat appears as a humane partnership among the members of the same society, where each individual bears responsibility towards others, everyone collaborates to build a cohesive society dominated by justice and solidarity. Zakat is not just money given, but a moral and social message that affirms that the strength of society lies in its cooperation, and its real prosperity is achieved when its members stand side by side in the face of poverty and need, to together create a more merciful and stable society.
