Transforming Hitlers Birthplace in Austria into a Police Headquarters

Khaberni - The transformation of Nazi leader Adolf Hitler's home in Austria into a police station, which will soon be inaugurated, has sparked widespread criticism, despite the primary stated purpose of the new use of the home is to deter visits from Nazism enthusiasts.

This building dates back to the 17th century, and it is where the German dictator was born on April 20, 1889. It is located on a commercial street in the town of Braunau am Inn in Austria, near the border with Germany.

The Austrian Interior Minister has announced that the work that began at the house in 2023 will soon be completed. Workers are currently installing external window frames, while the old yellow paint is being replaced with a modern façade.

The authorities hope that this will help turn the page on a sensitive chapter in a country sometimes accused of not having fully assumed its responsibility for the atrocities committed by the Nazis, with a far-right party, founded by former Nazis, leading in the polls after winning the legislative elections in 2024, although it has not been able to form a government.

The French Press Agency reported today, Saturday, from the Austrian Interior that after a three-year delay, the work is expected to be finished by the end of next March, with the police station beginning operations in the second quarter of this year.

 Attraction for Nazis
The house, which had been owned by the same family since 1912, had been leased to the Austrian state since 1972, which turned it into a center for the disabled, a group of the community that was persecuted during the Nazi era. However, it has always been a center of attraction for those fascinated by Nazi ideas and influenced by Hitler's personality.

The last owner of the house, Gerlinde Pommer, objected to the transformation of the building and challenged the state's expropriation of it with all possible legal means. A special law had to be passed in this regard in 2016.
