Life Imprisonment for Former South Korean President Due to Martial Law

Khaberni - Today, a life imprisonment sentence was issued against the former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol for imposing martial law, which lasted about 6 hours only, during December 2024 to suppress opposition.
The Seoul Central Court found Yoon guilty of mobilizing military and police forces in an unlawful attempt to control the National Assembly led by liberals, detaining politicians, and establishing an unregulated authority for a long period.
Yoon is likely to appeal the verdict.
The public prosecutor demanded the death penalty for the former president, and believed that he deserved the harshest punishment under the law because of the threat his actions posed to democracy in the country.
Yoon defended the martial law decree issued on December 3, 2024, as a necessary action against liberals who he described as "anti-state" forces that obstruct his agenda with their parliamentary majority.
