4 Common Driving Positions Harmful to the Back and Neck

Khaberni - Many people drive their cars daily in incorrect sitting positions that can significantly strain the back and neck.
In this regard, Josh Newsome, a spinal chiropractor at Ancoats Clinic, revealed 4 common driving positions that negatively affect the body, along with simple tips for correction and healthy driving.

1. The Rollercoaster Position

The driver sits with elevated shoulders and a tight grip on the steering wheel, causing continuous tension in the neck, shoulders, and arms.

Newsome said: "Over time, this tension leads to muscle strain and stiffness, especially in traffic congestion where the body does not relax completely".

2. The Slouch Position

This involves tilting the seat back excessively while leaning to one side.

Newsome adds: "You may feel temporarily comfortable, but one side of the body bears more strain, increasing pressure on the lower back and hips during long journeys".

3. The Racer Position

The driver sits back with arms and legs extended, mimicking the style of race car drivers.

Newsome explained: "This reduces the body's ability to absorb shocks and increases pressure on the shoulders, hips, and lower back, especially in traffic congestion".

4. The Hamster Position

This is characterized by sitting very close to the steering wheel with a bent back.

Newsome pointed out: "This position causes continuous pressure on the neck and upper spine and is a primary reason for muscle stiffness among daily car drivers".

How to drive correctly?

The ideal driving posture is called "the Professional". This position includes:

Sitting upright with the hips slightly raised above the knees.
    Gently bending the elbows.
Resting the head on the headrest.

Newsome's tips for healthy driving: "Let the seat support your body, maintain a natural sitting posture, and avoid forcing yourself into specific positions. Simple changes can significantly reduce stress and make daily commutes more comfortable".
