Khaberni - A recent study has shown that a specific type of music can contribute to reducing anxiety levels in a large number of people who suffer from stress.
Stress sometimes appears without prior warning, before an important meeting, after a restless night, or a thought that incessantly occupies the mind. In such moments, anxiety takes over everything, and many people look for quick, simple, and accessible solutions. Here, music emerges as an unexpected option that has attracted the attention of researchers, according to the French magazine "Pipa Magazine".
According to a recent study conducted by Metropolitan Toronto University, and published on January 21, 2026, in the scientific journal for mental health "PLOS", listening to a particular type of music for a specified duration can actually help soothe anxiety.
This discovery is intriguing, especially since anxiety disorders affect a large number of people daily. To explain this effect, researchers Daniel K. Mullen and Frank A. Russo conducted an experiment involving 144 participants selected from over 1300 volunteers, all of whom were experiencing moderate anxiety levels and were already undergoing medication treatments.
According to the French magazine, the goal was not to replace medication treatments but to assess whether this approach could represent a simple addition that improves mental state.
Researcher Daniel K. Mullen explained that this method could represent an important alternative for people who do not have access to therapy or medications, noting that some medications can take weeks to show results, whereas music is a cost-effective means that can be used to achieve immediate calm within a treatment plan.
However, it’s not about just any type of music. The study focused on specific compositions that combine calm music sounds, nature sounds, and what is known as "auditory beats," which are sound effects designed to affect brain activity and enhance relaxation.
The participants attended listening sessions ranging from 12 to 36 minutes, aiming to determine the most effective duration.
The results showed that all listening sessions helped reduce symptoms, both physical and mental, but one duration stood out clearly. Frank A. Russo explained that there is a relationship between the listening duration and its effect, and that approximately 24 minutes of this type of music represents the perfect balance between effectiveness and convenience.
During this relatively short period, participants experienced a significant decrease in stress and an improvement in mood. The mind calms, the body relaxes, and a sense of comfort increases. This duration is practical and can be easily integrated into the daily routine.
To develop these results further, the company "Lucid" involved in the study worked on offering a digital solution that provides access to this type of content. Co-founder Aaron Lopi clarified that the goal is not to replace medical care but to provide a simple and attractive tool that can be used daily.
Despite the need for more studies to understand the long-term effects and impacts on other disorders, the conclusion is clear: sometimes, a few carefully selected minutes of music are enough to reduce stress and restore calm.
