The Real Reasons Behind Craving Sweets

Khaberni - It is believed that the desire to eat sweets is due to a lack of magnesium or other nutrients. However, the matter is not that simple, as the craving for sweets rarely has a single simple explanation.
According to experts, the cause may be rooted in fatigue, disruption of routine, stress, or habits unknown to the person, such as suddenly craving chocolate in the evening, having coffee and biscuits at work, or eating a piece of candy while traveling.

But why do we specifically crave sweets?

Cravings for certain foods are sometimes linked to the body's needs, but often they are influenced by lifestyle and mental state. Sweets are often the quickest response to fatigue or a drop in energy because their effect is almost immediate.

1- Fatigue and a sudden drop in energy:
When the day lengthens and breaks for rest and eating disappear, the brain searches for a quick source of energy. Sweets help increase blood sugar levels, giving a temporary feeling of activation.

2- Lack of sleep and disruption of daily routine:
The efficiency of hormones responsible for regulating appetite decreases without enough sleep, leading to an increased desire for quick carbohydrates, which provide an immediate feeling of support. In this case, sweets become a crutch for the exhausted body.

3- Stress and emotional pressure:
Sweets on stressful days act as a small reward; they provide a feeling of comfort and allow for a short break, even for a few minutes, helping to refocus and relieve some internal stress.

4- Long periods between meals:
Eating irregularly leads to a sharp decline in energy, making sweets appear as the easiest solution. It is like trying to fill an empty tank with the first available liquid, but its effect does not last long.

5- Habits and "taste setters":
Many people get used to having coffee or tea with biscuits, or eating something sweet while watching TV. Over time, the brain memorizes these links; thus, the intense craving for sweets results from daily habits, not from a nutritional deficiency.
And it can be said that the intense craving to eat sweets is almost entirely linked to daily habits such as irregular meal timing, late dinners, psychological stress, lack of sleep, and others. Sweets in this case are an easy way to immediately meet the body's needs.

Of course, there are suitable alternatives to sweets. According to experts, completely giving up sweets is not always the right choice. But it is very easy to eat regularly and add short breaks for eating healthy snacks. If the period between breakfast and lunch is two or three hours instead of five, the urge to eat sweets often decreases.

In addition, instead of hastily eating biscuits, you can eat yogurt or nuts. Drinking water can sometimes help too, since it is easy to confuse thirst with the desire to eat something sweet.
