Egypt Alleged Suicide Video Lands Famous Blogger in Police Custody

Khaberni - Egyptian security forces arrested a famous blogger after a video she posted on her social media accounts went viral, showing her consuming a number of pills, claiming she was attempting to end her life.

The video published by the Egyptian blogger "Rooh" caused widespread controversy and concern among followers, prompting authorities to monitor the video as soon as it was circulated and to take urgent measures to apprehend the account owner.

According to a security statement, the blogger was taken to the competent department's headquarters, where a police report was filed, and an investigation was initiated to determine the circumstances of the video's publication, her motives behind it, and to verify whether the attempt was genuine or had other intentions.

The public prosecution is conducting the necessary investigations to determine the charges directed at her, which may include publishing content that could harm the mental health of followers, suggesting suicide, and violating laws regulating online publishing.

This incident is the latest in a series of cases in which the Egyptian authorities swiftly intervene when content related to suicide or posing a risk to public safety and mental health is published, especially concerning minors.

In recent years, Egypt has seen a noticeable increase in cases of content publication involving suicide attempts or suggestions on social media platforms, particularly by some content creators and bloggers who have a large following.

The security bodies and public prosecution handle these cases under multiple provisions of the Law on Combating Information Technology Crimes, and sometimes under Article 309 repeated, which involves incitement to suicide or suggestion thereof, in addition to Article 25 of the Child Law if the followers include minors.
