How often should you change your toothbrush to protect your mouth from bacteria

Khaberni - The American Dental Association recommends changing your toothbrush every three to four months, or as soon as signs of wear appear on the bristles, to ensure effective removal of plaque and bacteria and to protect the gums and teeth.

Dentist Sonoko Nakasato notes that an old toothbrush becomes a breeding ground for bacteria, even with rinsing after use, and may reintroduce germs that caused illnesses such as the flu or sore throat.

Nakasato confirms that worn-out bristles lead to less effective cleaning, which may cause enamel erosion, gum recession, loss of tooth whiteness, and increased risk of decay.

This recommendation also applies to electric toothbrushes, which, despite their high effectiveness in removing plaque, are subject to the same rate of wear and attract germs as quickly as manual brushes. The heads should be replaced at the same rate as a traditional brush.

To extend the life of your toothbrush, Nakasato recommends keeping it in a vertical position to dry well, not storing it in a closed case, rinsing it after each use, not sharing it with others, avoiding excessive pressure during cleaning, and reminding yourself to replace it by marking the date in a calendar or setting a reminder on your phone.

Regularly changing your toothbrush not only maintains your oral health but also protects you from germs and ensures more effective cleaning, while preserving the whiteness of your teeth and the integrity of your gums.
