Khaberni - A recent medical study has revealed that pear peels contain substances that enhance intestinal health and protect it from inflammation.
The researchers conducted experiments to verify the effects of polyphenols found in pear peels on ulcerative colitis, and the trials on laboratory mice showed that the polyphenol extract inhibited the production of inflammatory molecules in immune cells, reducing weight loss rates, lowering inflammation levels in the blood, and significantly reducing colon tissue damage in affected mice.
During the study, the researchers focused on the effect of polyphenols on gut bacteria as well, noting that it helps increase the number of bacteria that support the intestinal mucous membrane's health, reduce the proportion of inflammation-causing bacteria, and decrease the excessive activity of immune mechanisms in the mucous membrane, including the pathways responsible for antigen recognition.
The scientists indicated that the results they reached demonstrate that the benefits of this fruit are not only in its pulp but also in its peels, and pear peels should be considered a potential functional food ingredient for maintaining intestinal health, although confirming their effectiveness in humans requires further research.
