South Korea Former First Lady Sentenced to Prison

Khaberni - Kim Kyun-hee, the former First Lady of South Korea and wife of former President Yoon Suk Yeol, was sentenced to one year and eight months in prison in one of her corruption cases.
Kim Kyun-hee faces multiple charges, including manipulating stock prices at "Deutsche Motors" between 2009-2012, interfering in the parliamentary elections of 2022 and 2024, and receiving lavish bribes such as jewelry and handbags valued at over $200,000 from businessmen and politicians.

The Seoul Central District Court issued an arrest warrant for her in August 2025 due to concerns of evidence destruction, and Kim apologized during her interrogation but denied the charges.

In December 2025, the public prosecutor demanded a 15-year prison sentence, but the current sentence is one year and 8 months in a specific case, with 16 other cases pending involving changing the route of a highway to benefit her family’s land.

This is not the first time, as a South Korean court previously sentenced former President Park Geun-hye to 24 years in prison in 2018 on similar corruption charges, reflecting the judiciary system's strictness towards the executive power.
