Khaberni - In a shocking incident captured by cameras, a mayor in the Philippines survived a serious assassination attempt after gunmen targeted his convoy with an "RPG" missile, in an attack described as one of the most dangerous armed assaults in the region recently.

According to reports mentioned by international newspapers, the attack occurred while the convoy of Akmed Mitra Ampatuan, mayor of the town of Sharif Aguak in Maguindanao Province, was traveling on a road in Poblacion district, where surveillance camera recordings showed the moment gunmen emerged from a vehicle, before one of them launched a missile that hit the armored vehicle, a "Toyota Land Cruiser".

The explosion caused material damage to the vehicle without penetrating it, while the Philippine police confirmed that the mayor was not harmed, although two members of his security team suffered minor injuries and were subsequently taken to the hospital for treatment.

The police indicated that the security forces chased the attackers immediately after the assault, leading to an armed confrontation in which three out of the four suspects were killed, while efforts continue to track down the driver who fled the scene.

The police explained that investigations are being conducted by a special team comprised of multiple security units, amid suspicions that the attackers were hired to carry out the operation, revealing that one of the main suspects was previously wanted in cases of murder, armed robbery, and violation of the weapon carry ban.

Furthermore, the governor of Maguindanao del Sur, Ali Midtimbang, strongly condemned the assassination attempt, especially since it occurred in a residential area and endangered the lives of civilians, emphasizing that violence and intimidation will not be tolerated in the province, and affirming that authorities will pursue all those involved until they are brought to justice.
