Egyptian Fatwa Authority Confirms Interpreting the Quran Using Artificial Intelligence is Legally Prohibited

Khaberni - In response to one of the questions it received, the Egyptian Dar al-Ifta stated on its website that relying on artificial intelligence applications to interpret the Holy Qur'an is not permissible, affirming that the matter is "legally prohibited".

The Egyptian Fatwa Authority added that the complete reliance on artificial intelligence applications such as "Chat GPT" and other similar applications in interpreting the Holy Qur'an is legally prohibited, attributing this to "the preservation of the Book of Allah from assumption and conjecture, and from its interpretation being circulated without knowledge or being attributed to it something that has not been proven from its people."

Severe legal shortcomings
The Fatwa Authority confirmed in its statement that the prohibition constitutes "limiting the delving into the meanings of the Qur'an to those who are verified with the tools and established rules of interpretation by interpreters and jurists."

The Fatwa considered resorting to artificial intelligence in interpreting the Holy Qur'an prohibited due to it being fraught with "severe" legal and methodological flaws, notably "ignorance of the source," and the inability to verify the accuracy of what is conveyed, as artificial intelligence systems are not issued by specialists nor do they adhere to a scientifically established method in interpretation.

Approved interpretations and scholars
It also added that these systems generate their answers based on automatic processing of various materials collected from multiple sources in different languages and differing methodologies with contradictory references, some of which may be distorted, misrepresented, or issued by unqualified entities.

The Fatwa also emphasized the necessity of referring to the approved books of interpretations or by inquiring and asking the scholars from specialized religious institutions through available means, in order to preserve the Book of Allah and to ensure a correct understanding based on knowledge, integrity, and awareness.
