Khaberni - U.S. President Donald Trump suggested on Friday putting the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) "to the test" by invoking Article 5 to enforce the protection of the southern borders of the United States from "migrant invasions".
Trump wrote in a controversial statement: "We should have done Article 5, forcing NATO to come here to protect our southern borders, thereby freeing large numbers of border patrol agents for other tasks."
The proposal comes in the context of discussions at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where Trump is promoting his security initiatives such as the "Peace Council", amid disputes with allies like Canada.
Article 5 of the NATO Charter mandates automatic collective defense if a member is subjected to an armed attack, but Trump associates it with illegal immigration as an "invasion" that requires international intervention.
