Prolonged Sitting Harms Veins and Increases Risk of Varicose Veins

Khaberni - Dr. Olimi Sherinbek, a vein surgery specialist, reported that working for long hours on the computer gradually affects vein health, which contributes to the appearance of varicose veins in the legs.
According to the doctor, the risk of developing varicose veins is not limited to the elderly but includes all office workers, explaining that varicose veins have become one of the main health issues in the 21st century, and how the office lifestyle impacts vein health.

The doctor pointed out that sitting for long hours in one position keeps the leg and foot muscles almost inactive, weakening them and disrupting the natural venous blood flow, leading to blood accumulation in the lower limbs, swelling, and a familiar feeling of heavy legs.

He said: "The venous system in the legs is designed to push blood back to the heart, overcoming gravity, and muscles play a pivotal role in this process, as they literally pump the blood by pressing on the veins during movement. When a person is inactive, this mechanism stops working efficiently, causing the vessel walls to lose their elasticity and the vein valves to weaken, leading to their expansion and deformation."
As the disease progresses, symptoms such as night cramps, leg numbness, and tingling occur. Later, a vascular network and nodular formations appear on the skin, in addition to inflammation of the vessel walls and formation of blood clots.

Dr. Sherinbek indicated that varicose veins in the legs are a serious venous condition, but it can be avoided by following some simple measures, such as:

Performing light leg exercises periodically, such as lifting and lowering the feet while sitting.

Standing up and walking a little during the day.

Avoiding sitting for long hours in one position, especially avoiding crossing one leg over the other.

As for treatment, it is currently possible using a special biological patch, without anesthesia or heating the skin with a laser or any thermal damage. Each session takes about 20 minutes and is suitable for all ages, including the elderly and those with chronic diseases. It is not associated with a specific time of the year and does not require a long recovery period or wearing compression garments.
