Khaberni - Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, affirmed that the UAE continues to consolidate its global position in the field of sustainable energy, driven by a comprehensive national vision and quality investments that have enhanced the transition towards clean and renewable energy sources.
Speaking to the Emirates News Agency "WAM" on the sidelines of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2026, he said that the installed capacity of renewable energy in the country has currently exceeded 7.7 gigawatts, with projects under implementation expected to increase the total capacity to more than 23 gigawatts by 2031, clearly indicating the accelerating pace of transformation in the national energy system.
He pointed out that national investments in the renewable and clean energy sector have exceeded 190 billion dirhams, reflecting the great confidence that the country places in this vital sector as a main driver for sustainable development and low-emission economic growth.
Al Mazrouei clarified that the UAE has increased its national target for electricity production from clean sources to 35% by 2031, alongside integrating the national hydrogen strategy 2050 into the comprehensive energy sector planning, enhancing the country's readiness for a low-carbon energy future.
He noted that the installed capacity of renewable energy in the country recorded a growth of 117% during the period from 2022 to 2025, reflecting the effectiveness of national policies and the acceleration of implementing strategic projects aimed at building a more sustainable and efficient energy system.
Al Mazrouei confirmed that national energy and water demand management programs, led by the National Energy and Water Demand Management Program launched in 2020, contributed to reducing more than 14.8 million tons of carbon emissions and achieving financial savings exceeding two billion dollars in five years within a national path targeting a reduction in energy consumption by 43% and water by 50% by 2050.
He mentioned that the UAE continues its efforts to achieve the targets for the next fifty years in the sustainability of the energy sector, diversifying its sources, and accelerating the transition to clean energy sources, noting that the country is the fastest-growing market for clean and renewable energy sources in the region.
Al Mazrouei affirmed that the UAE aims to reach a carbon-free future by enhancing leading technologies and developing and employing modern technology to serve the energy sector, alongside its significant efforts to make hydrogen a reliable global energy source, based on being a traditional hydrogen producer and having natural resources and technological capabilities that support this strategic orientation.
