Egypt A couple faces execution in a case of killing a child for theft

Khaberni - A horrendous crime sparked widespread controversy in Egypt, after the Giza Criminal Court decided to refer the papers of a paramedic, who works in the ambulance service, and his wife to the Grand Mufti of the Republic, to seek a religious opinion on their execution, following their accusation of killing a 5-year-old girl with the intent of stealing her gold earring.

According to local media reports on the investigations, the defendants, a young couple with a small daughter, were experiencing severe financial difficulties, which led them to plan a crime described as extremely cruel. According to the public prosecutor, the couple lured the girl to their home under the pretext of playing, before they assaulted her, leading to her death, and then they stole her gold earring.

The investigations indicated that the female defendant later sold the earring in one of the gold jewelry shops, while the couple tried to hide the crime by participating in the search for the girl with her family, until her body was found on the roof of the building where they lived.

Surveillance cameras helped reveal the details of the incident, showing the accused man taking the girl to his residence, which led to the couple’s arrest. During the investigations, the defendants detailed their commitment to the crime, and the husband attempted to escape from the prosecution's headquarters, before he was controlled.

The court, unanimously by its members, decided to refer the defendants’ papers to the Egyptian Grand Mufti, in preparation for issuing the final verdict in a subsequent session, according to the legal procedures followed in execution cases.
