The Energy Regulation Authority denies charging the cost of electrical loss to subscribers bills

Khaberni - The Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission denies the circulating claims of charging the cost of electrical loss to subscribers' bills, confirming that the monthly bill the subscriber receives exclusively reflects the actual consumption read from the meter and is calculated according to the approved tariff by the Authority, without including any direct or indirect mechanism to pass the cost of electrical loss in any way.

The Authority pointed out that circulating inaccurate information could mislead the public and raise unfounded fears, urging reliance on official sources when publishing or transmitting any information related to the energy sector in order to maintain public interest and citizens' trust in the national energy system.

The Authority confirmed that the responsibility for dealing with the cost of lost energy rests with the licensed electric companies within their operational frameworks and according to the approved standards and indicators, under the supervision of the Authority. The Authority regularly and methodically monitors loss indicators and obliges service providers to implement specific programs and procedures to reduce loss and improve performance efficiency.

The Authority explained that the expansion in the installation of smart meters is a crucial tool in reducing loss, especially non-technical loss, as smart meters provide high accuracy in measuring consumption, and the ability to immediately detect tampering or unauthorized extraction, thus improving operational monitoring efficiency of the network and protecting subscribers' rights.

The Authority warned that publishing or promoting incorrect or misleading information regarding the mechanisms of billing or charging for electrical loss could lead to legal accountability, affirming its right to take legal action against any person or entity that disseminates information likely to mislead the public or harm trust in the national energy system.

The Authority renewed its commitment to protecting consumers' rights and enhancing transparency, confirming the availability of official channels for filing complaints and objections, and the right of every subscriber to request a meter reading review or its inspection by the competent authorities. It added that all complaints are dealt with seriously and professionally, and appropriate corrective actions are taken.
