SDF Announces Approval to Leave Aleppo

Khaberni - The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced on Sunday the withdrawal of their fighters from the Ashrafiyeh and Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhoods in Aleppo, after days of clashes with government forces.

The Syrian Democratic Forces stated in a statement, "We reached an understanding that leads to a ceasefire and secures the evacuation of martyrs, wounded, civilians stuck, and fighters from the Ashrafiyeh and Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhoods to northern and eastern Syria."

The official Syrian news agency "SANA" confirmed, "The buses carrying the last batch of SDF elements from the Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhood in Aleppo left for northeast Syria."

There were conflicting reports from the city on Saturday, as authorities announced a halt to the fighting and began the evacuation of Kurdish fighters from Aleppo to the areas of the Kurdish Autonomous Administration, while the latter quickly denied the announcement.

Clashes erupted between the Kurdish forces and the army on Tuesday in the Kurdish neighborhoods of Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiyeh in Aleppo. The battles resulted in the death of at least 21 civilians according to figures from both sides, and the displacement of 155,000 people from the neighborhoods according to the governor of Aleppo.

The battles came amidst stalled negotiations between Damascus and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) since the signing of an agreement that stipulated the integration of the institutions of the Kurdish Autonomous Administration within the framework of the Syrian state.

The "Syrian Democratic Forces" reported that the withdrawal of the fighters was mediated by international parties to stop attacks and violations against our people in Aleppo.

The announcement of the "SDF" about the withdrawal of the Kurdish fighters came after the American envoy Tom Barrack held a meeting on Saturday with the Syrian transitional president Ahmad al-Shar’, after which he "urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint and to immediately cease hostilities."
