A Technological Trick in Driving Exam Turns into a Legal Issue

Khaberni - A man in Ryazan Oblast, Russia, was fined 30,000 Russian rubles (375 USD) for using a jacket equipped with a hidden camera to cheat on the theoretical traffic rules exam.

According to "Novosti" agency, which relied on official court documents, the man handed over the jacket to his friend, who wore it during the exam with the aim of transmitting the questions to someone outside the examination hall to get the answers. However, the instructor discovered the trick, leading to the exposure of the attempt.

Initially, a district court convicted the man under Article 138.1 of the Russian Criminal Code — relating to illegal trafficking of technical means designed for secretly obtaining information — and imposed a fine of 40,000 rubles. Nevertheless, the accused denied the trafficking charge and appealed the judgment.

Upon review, the appeal court amended the decision: it annulled his conviction under the charge of "illegally obtained technical means", found him guilty only of "illegal trading of special espionage equipment", and reduced the fine to 30,000 rubles.

Later, the defendant's lawyer filed a petition before the judicial review court, seeking the cancellation of the previous judgments and a re-examination of the case. However, after reviewing the case file, the court concluded there were no legal violations and denied the request.
