Khaberni - The "WhatsApp" platform is preparing to launch one of its most awaited features for years, which is the support of "Usernames", a step that could change the way users communicate on the app.
A long-awaited feature
Despite the widespread popularity of the app, "WhatsApp" has relied on phone numbers as the primary means of communication, raising questions about its delay in adopting a username system, similar to other platforms.
The first indicators of this feature appeared in 2023 through beta versions, but development continued for years before it approached official launch, according to a report published by "phonearena" and accessed by "Al Arabiya Business".
Phased rollout for users
According to recent leaks, Meta has indeed started to roll out the feature gradually, where some users can find the "username" option within the app settings.
Upon activation, the user will be able to create a unique name and use it instead of sharing their phone number when starting conversations.
Terms and conditions of use
The company has set a number of rules for choosing usernames, the most important of which are:
- The name must contain at least one letter.
- Lowercase letters, numbers, dots, and underscores are allowed.
- It cannot begin with "www." or end with domains like ".com".
- It may not start or end with a dot.
- The length must be between 3 and 30 characters.
Integration with other platforms
It is expected that the feature will allow the use of the same username associated with "Facebook" or "Instagram" accounts, which enhances integration within the "Meta" ecosystem.
Greater privacy and a more modern experience
This update represents an important leap towards improving privacy, as users will not have to share their personal number with others, and it gives the application a more modern touch that aligns with other messaging applications.
After years of development, it seems that WhatsApp is finally ready to provide a more flexible and secure experience, a step that has been long awaited by hundreds of millions around the world.
