Workshop at Amman Arab University to Enhance Students Skills in Gestalt Theory in Architectural Design

Khaberni  - In its commitment to enhancing the educational process and the practical and cognitive aspects for its students, and following the directives of Professor Dr. Muhammad Al-Widian, the university president, and under the supervision of Dr. Anwar Al-Assaf, dean of the College of Engineering, the Department of Architecture at the university held a specialized training workshop on Gestalt Theory, presented by Professor Dr. Hanan Ahmed, a faculty member in the college, to architecture students of all academic years, aimed at enhancing their understanding of cognitive principles and their applications in architectural design.

The workshop aimed to introduce students to the principles of Gestalt theory in visual perception and its role in understanding formal relationships and visual organization in architectural design, due to its direct impact on reading volumes, spaces, architectural compositions, and enhancing the design quality aesthetically and functionally. The workshop included a theoretical and practical explanation of fundamental Gestalt principles such as proximity, similarity, continuity, closure, and the relationship between figure and background, linking these concepts with real architectural examples to develop design thinking in students and enable them to employ them in their academic projects.

The workshop also included interactive discussions and analytical applications of architectural works, aimed at enhancing the students' ability to critically and methodologically read the architectural scene, aligning with the requirements of contemporary design, and at the conclusion of the workshop, participants expressed their appreciation for the importance of this workshop in enhancing the theoretical aspect linked to practical application, confirming its role in honing the intellectual and visual skills of the students, and supporting the university’s approach towards offering comprehensive architectural education that keeps pace with modern developments in the field of architecture and design.
