Governor of Karak Assault on valley paths exacerbated flood risk in Iraq

Khaberni - The Governor of Karak, Dr. Qabalan Al-Sharif, affirmed that the concerted field efforts among various state institutions are the main pillar to ensure the safety of citizens and maintain national gains and the infrastructure in the governorate, praising the pioneering and central role played by the Ministry of Public Works and Housing in supporting the municipalities of Karak, especially in Iraq village and areas of Al-Mazar Al-Janoubi district, which was highlighted by the high coordination between the Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Public Works, Ministry of Local Administration, and security forces, enabling field teams to tackle hotspots and secure vital roads efficiently and effectively.
Al-Sharif explained that the field tours and technical reports prepared by the joint committee, which included directors of public works, district governance, the municipality, representatives from public security and civil defense, have indicated previous organizational errors that caused the diversion of the natural path of flood streams.
Al-Sharif emphasized the need to take decisive measures to stop encroachments on the paths of valleys due to their severe risk to water flow and the safety of nearby homes, following the erosion of the municipal street body and the redirection of water towards citizens’ homes, with directives to immediately start preparing a comprehensive drainage plan for the area that resolves the historical challenges related to water erosions, in addition to completing the rehabilitation of dirt roads and connecting them to the main network using sufficient engineering culverts that match the geographical nature of the area.
Al-Sharif pointed out that the precise technical inspection in the areas of Al-Dawar, Ain Al-Mughaisil, and the health center showed the effectiveness of the interventions carried out by the Ministry of Public Works' staff during the past period, noting that the main street number (825) is structurally sound and the culvert built on it operates with high efficiency, and the "gabion" wall for the box culvert in Ain Al-Mughaisil area proved its effectiveness in protecting the road from side erosions, while emphasizing the need to address overlaps in the health center area suffering from uncompleted road connections and insufficient culverts.
Al-Sharif mentioned that a joint committee from the Ministries of Public Works and Local Administration will begin, starting tomorrow morning, Monday, to investigate the causes of the collapses that occurred and to raise technical recommendations to address them across all locations in the governorate.
He affirmed the importance of working with a team spirit among service and security staff to ensure the durability of roads and the safety of residents in mountainous and sloped areas, aiming to provide the best services to citizens and develop public facilities to ensure the highest standards of safety and quality.
