Khaberni - Raed Al-Khattab, the director of the Meteorological Department, clarified that the Karak Governorate experienced the highest rainfall rates since 1971 (55 years) during the recent low pressures, which led to the formation of torrents and soil erosion due to the mountainous nature of the area.
Raed Al-Khattab, in a conversation on Sunday during a meeting of the Parliamentary Public Services and Transport Committee, said that the department did its duty and provided all the necessary information and warnings about the low pressure, indicating that there are about 300 liaison officers with various institutions and ministries receiving updates firsthand.
Al-Khattab reviewed the roles and responsibilities of the department, its monitoring mechanisms, and the network of measurement stations spread across different regions of the kingdom, in addition to its role in supporting the sectors of land, air, and sea transport and enhancing public safety by providing official bodies and the public with timely meteorological reports and warnings.
The Parliamentary Public Services and Transport Committee, during a meeting held on Sunday chaired by Deputy Ayman Badadweh, reviewed the working mechanism of the Meteorological Department and the strategies it employs in the fields of weather monitoring and climate forecasting.
Badadweh, in the presence of the director of the Meteorological Department, Raed Al-Khattab, requested clarification on the measures taken to ensure the accuracy of the information issued by the department, especially in light of climate changes and weather conditions experienced by the kingdom.
He emphasized that the Meteorological Department is considered one of the important national institutions due to the nature of its work connected to various vital sectors, emphasizing the necessity of relying on its publications in the age of misinformation spread through social networks.
Badadweh and the members of the committee, Deputies Taysir Abu Arabi, Jihad Madanat, Hayel Ayash, Hassan Riati, and Abdel Raouf Al-Rabihat, stressed that the safety of citizens and the protection of public facilities and the transport sector are a top priority, confirming the importance of the national role played by the Meteorological Department, and the necessity of its technical and technological support to enhance its operational efficiency to keep up with scientific and technological developments in this field.
The committee members also called for highlighting the main challenges facing the department, especially in terms of infrastructure and updating devices and providing specialized staff, expressing their readiness to offer the necessary support to the department under the dome of parliament to enable it to perform its tasks efficiently and enhance its readiness to deal with emergency weather conditions.
