Khaberni - In a terrifying incident, a court in Shenzhen, China sentenced a Chinese mother to three years in prison with a four-year suspension after she inadvertently caused her daughter's death during what authorities described as "superstitious rituals to expel evil spirits".
A report issued by the Shenzhen Public Prosecutors' Office in Guangdong Province, southern China, revealed that the mother, named "Li", and her daughters were obsessed with superstitious practices involving telepathy and unconventional healing methods.
The mother and her daughters lived in a continuous illusion, believing that evil spirits were attacking them and taking over their bodies, and that their "spirits were sold" to mysterious forces.
The tragedy occurred in December of last year when the youngest daughter, named "Xie", suddenly claimed that a demon inhabited her body and demanded her mother and older sister perform rituals to expel it.
The rituals included intense pressure on the girl's chest and pouring water down her throat to force her to vomit. The mother and elder daughter carried out the rituals without hesitation, while the victim confirmed the effectiveness of what they were doing and urged them to continue.
In a shocking shock, the family discovered the next morning that the girl's mouth was bleeding, and immediately called the police. The medical team arrived to declare her death at the scene.
In an official context, the court convicted the mother of manslaughter, considering that her intention was to help her daughter. The elder daughter received the same sentence as her mother.
The incident sparked a wave of outrage on Chinese social media, where one follower commented: "This is a horrifying and ridiculous case", while another questioned: "What kind of sect is this? Are we really living in 2025?"
A third follower pointed out that "sect believers are usually very stubborn, they might imagine that they can blame the devil", while others called for enhancing scientific education to prevent the recurrence of such tragedies.
Regrettably, Taiwan had witnessed a similar incident in 2023, when a 56-year-old man and his wife performed a spirit expulsion ritual on their 28-year-old son, after he had refused food for days. The father and the younger son held the victim, while the mother inserted her fist into his throat trying to force him to vomit, resulting in his death.
