Exports A Gateway to Competitiveness and Employment
الكاتب: الأستاذ الدكتور أمجد الفاهوم

The notable rise in national exports to the European Union countries is not merely an arithmetic improvement in the balance of foreign trade, but carries deeper implications that affect the core of the Jordanian industry and its ability to compete locally and globally. Growth exceeding 45 percent over a few months indicates that Jordanian industrial products are beginning to establish their presence in markets that are among the most stringent in terms of specifications, quality, and sustainability—an achievement only possible when the industry reaches a level of maturity that allows it to compete with global value chains.

For the local industry, this export expansion reflects a gradual transition from a limited market model to a production model directed at foreign markets, a strategic shift that enhances factory efficiency, pushes for technological improvements, quality control, and development of industrial management. Furthermore, breaking into markets such as Italy and Germany within the European Union indirectly certifies the competitiveness of the Jordanian industry, opening up opportunities for expansion in other markets within the same European system.

However, this pathway is not without challenges. The increase in external demand imposes pressures on production costs, amid rising prices for energy, transport, and financing, while also presenting the industry with the continuous challenge of complying with fast-evolving European environmental and technical standards. Additionally, there is a gap in export readiness among a wide segment of small and medium-sized enterprises, which possess exportable products but lack the tools for market access, or the capacity to produce in the required quantities and quality.

Overcoming these challenges requires a more export-focused industrial policy, starting with reducing production costs through smart incentives for energy and financing, enhancing logistic infrastructure and supply chains, and not ending at supporting the technical and marketing compliance of factories. Moreover, expanding programs that link local industry to European companies and leveraging trade agreements are essential to transform exporting from a limited activity into a lever for sustainable growth.

The most significant impact of this path is reflected on the job market. Export industries, especially in sectors like apparel, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and fertilizers, are among the most labor-intensive sectors. Every expansion in exports means an increase in production capacity, the creation of direct and indirect job opportunities, and stimulation of the transportation, service, and industrial support sectors. When exporting is linked with policies for training and professional qualification, it becomes an effective tool to reduce unemployment, particularly among the youth.

In conclusion, the growth of exports to the European Union not only represents commercial success but also an indicator of an economic path capable of repositioning Jordanian industry on the global map. The real challenge today lies not only in maintaining this growth but in deepening it and transforming it into a permanent engine for industrial competitiveness and sustainable employment, making exporting a national project that transcends numbers to build a more productive economy capable of creating opportunities.
