Implementation of 276 water harvesting projects to improve the agricultural sector in Jerash

Khaberni - The Jerash Directorate of Agriculture has carried out 276 water harvesting projects since the beginning of the current year to enhance practical solutions for water waste and loss, and to advance the agricultural sector.

Ala Al-Mahasneh, the Director of Jerash Agriculture, said that the Directorate places great importance on water harvesting projects due to their direct impact in improving the water reality for farmers and reducing dependence on traditional sources.

She indicated that the projects aimed overall to collect rainwater, store it, and improve its efficiency use in the agricultural sector. They also focused on collecting rainwater for storage and use in supplementary irrigation and livestock watering, which contributed to improving water availability for farmers, reducing pressure on traditional water resources, and achieving sustainability of water resources.

Al-Mahasneh noted that these projects are a fundamental pillar to support water security and improve the sustainability of agriculture, which largely relies on the agricultural sector and the cultivation of seasonal crops, especially in light of the good rainfall.

She confirmed that a project has been implemented to line irrigation channels with a length of 2000 meters of cement channels aiming to reduce water loss due to leakage and increase the efficiency of water transport to agricultural holdings. This reflected positively on increasing the efficiency of water use and expanding the agricultural areas benefiting from it, in addition to implementing 900 meters of plastic irrigation hoses to reduce water wastage and improve its distribution over the agricultural lands, which contributed to enhancing the efficiency of irrigation systems and significantly improving agricultural production.
