Syria Welcomes 2026 with a New Currency

Khaberni - The Governor of the Central Bank of Syria, Abdel Qader Hasriya, announced on Thursday that the country will begin a process to replace the currency with new banknotes on January 1, 2026, as part of a plan to replace currencies issued during the Assad era.

Hasriya said that the replacement process would be smooth and organized, noting that the new Syrian currency represents a symbol of Syria's financial sovereignty after liberation, and a milestone for a new phase built on the cooperation of all and managed by the Central Bank of Syria, to be a national achievement added to what has been achieved after liberation, and a firm step towards economic stability and resurgence.

He confirmed that this opportunity represents a new success for the new Syria, and a pivotal moment in the country's financial and economic history.

Informed sources said in August that Syria will issue new banknotes, removing two zeros from its currency, in an attempt to restore public confidence in the Lira, which had severely depreciated in value.

This step aims to support the Syrian Lira after its purchasing power had collapsed to record lows following a 14-year conflict that ended with the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad last December.
