Italy fines Apple 115 million

The Italian competition authority announced yesterday that it fined the company «Apple» more than 115.69 million dollars (98.6 million euros) for «abusing its dominant position in the market», while the American company confirmed that it intends to appeal the decision.

The authority clarified in a statement that «Apple» had violated competition law in the innovative applications market.

It added: «(Apple) enjoys an absolute dominant position in this market through its app store».

The Italian authority also stated that «Apple» had also imposed very restrictive terms, concerning the protection of users' privacy in the context of competition.

The authority concluded that these terms imposed by «Apple» were unilateral and harm the interests of its business partners, and they are disproportionate to the goal of protecting privacy.

On the other hand, «Apple», in a statement, expressed «its strong opposition to the decision of the Italian competition authority», and announced its intention to appeal the decision.

The company asserts that privacy protection rules «are applied equally to various developers, including (Apple), and have been adopted by our customers, and have won the approval of privacy advocates and data protection authorities around the world».
