The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has joined the network of globally recognized sites for the protection of the night sky, by accrediting the Dark Sky Park in the Great Nefud Desert in the Hail region.
According to the International Dark-Sky Association, the Great Nefud Desert Dark Sky Park spans an area of about 13,416 square kilometers, within one of the largest and most environmentally distinctive deserts in the Arabian Peninsula. It is characterized by its wide sand dunes, which have an orange hue leaning towards red; some dunes rise up to about 200 meters, giving the location a unique natural and visual value.
