Educators Demand the Removal of a Unit from the 2008 Secondary Biology Curriculum

Khaberni  - Educators, specialized teachers, and experts demand the removal of the fourth unit from the biology subject for students born in 2008.

This occurred during a meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on Education and Teaching, chaired by MP Ibrahim Al-Qaraleh, on Sunday, to discuss the new general secondary education system based on academic fields, spanning two years, with the presence of Dr. Mustafa Al-Afouri, the Director General of Modern Systems Schools, and a group of educators, experts, and teachers.

Al-Qaraleh emphasized the importance of developing the general secondary education system to align with the current requirements and the job market, contributing to enhancing the quality of education and improving student skills, stressing the need for a gradual implementation of the system and clear regulatory instructions to ensure fairness and equal opportunities and proper implementation.

For their part, MPs Feryal Bani Salman, Tamar Nasser Al-Din, Huda Atoum, Mohammed Al-Maraie, Ibrahim Al-Hamidi, Rania Khalifat, Issa Nasar, Shafa Sawan, Mohammed Ra'oud, Ahmed Al-Raqab, Andrei Al-Hawari, and Salem Al-Amri emphasized the need for a gradual and thoughtful implementation of the system, subjecting it to periodic evaluations to assess its impact on academic achievement, stating that any educational development must be based on clear studies and a genuine partnership between the Ministry of Education, teachers, and parents, ensuring the students' best interests.

The committee decided to hold a meeting with the National Center for Curriculum Development, Examination Management, and relevant entities to continue discussing the new system.

The committee also discussed during the meeting the features, objectives, and implementation mechanisms of the system, the readiness of the Ministry of Education for its execution, and its implications on students and the stages preceding general secondary education, in addition to discussing its pros and cons, and the potential marginalization of some scientific subjects and its effect on the educational level.

In turn, Dr. Al-Afouri stressed the necessity that the new system is based on a clear educational vision that considers students' capabilities and preferences, aligns with higher education requirements and job market needs, providing adequate infrastructure and teacher training before full implementation, and involving the educational field in continuous evaluation to ensure quality outputs without undue pressure.
