Bologna clinched a meeting with Napoli in the final of the Italian Football Super Cup after overcoming Inter Milan 3-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in regular time of the match held in Riyadh this Friday.
Several players from both teams missed penalty shots before Ciro Immobile scored the decisive penalty to lead Bologna to the final.
Bologna will meet Napoli on the upcoming Monday after Italy’s champion defeated Milan 2-0 in the other semi-final match last Thursday.
Inter opened the scoring early at the "King Saud University" stadium when Alessandro Bastoni sent a cross in the second minute which Marcus Thuram met with a direct shot into the net.
Despite Inter's dominance, Bologna was awarded a penalty in the 35th minute following a handball on defender Jan Becik. Striker Riccardo Orsolini successfully executed the penalty to level the score.
Inter thought they had earned a penalty less than an hour from the start due to a foul, but the video assistant referee overturned the decision.
Despite the chances available to both teams, neither managed to secure a winning goal, sending the match directly to penalty kicks where Immobile secured the victory for Bologna.
On Thursday, Napoli ousted the defending champion Milan, after defeating them 2-0, in a match marked by verbal exchanges and insults between the technical teams of both sides.
