New Plates for This Category of Vehicles in Dubai

Khaberni - Khaberni - The Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai announced the introduction of an additional front plate for motorcycles and electric bikes that are used for delivery activities in companies. This was previously limited to a single rear plate and will start from the end of this month. The plate will be gradually added when the license is renewed, as part of the regulatory framework adopted by the authority to govern this vital sector, to keep pace with best global practices and the approved roadmap, which regulates all aspects of security and safety in delivery operations.

The measure of issuing additional front plates for delivery bikes is part of a package of solutions and initiatives in cooperation between the authority and the Dubai Police General Command. This comes after a series of meetings with partners from government and private sectors and consulting firms, to discuss and review procedures aimed at enhancing the regulation of this sector and specifying conditions that ensure the safety of drivers and road users, thus enhancing safety on the emirate’s roads.

The Executive Director for the Licensing Agency at the Roads and Transport Authority, Ahmed Mahboob, confirmed that the decision to issue the additional front plate will be applied to delivery sector bikes. Two plates (front and back) will be issued, in gold color with black writing bearing the symbol (9), to distinguish the delivery bikes category. They will be issued gradually with a new unified number different from the previous plate number, during the licensing or renewal of each bike, according to the renewal date or if it is damaged or lost.

Mahboob clarified that "the decision does not include non-commercial bikes (personal bikes), and the issuance of the additional front plate is confined to bikes used in activities of parcel and document transport, order management and delivery services, and the management of transportation and delivery orders through electronic platforms and smart applications, including the rental of motorcycles and electric bikes if operated in any of the referred activities».

He pointed out that this measure comes in response to the rapid growth witnessed in the delivery sector in recent years, in terms of demand volume and the increase in the number of bikes operating on the roads of the emirate, affirming that the regulations set by the authority for regulating and governing this sector will significantly contribute to enhancing traffic discipline, along with enhancing the transport and delivery services experience, in line with the priorities of the Roads and Transport Authority in maintaining the safety of road users. It is noted that the authority, in coordination with the Dubai Police General Command, recently revealed a decision to regulate the driving of delivery bikes on fast tracks on Dubai streets, and prohibited delivery bike drivers from driving in the fast lanes on the far left in streets consisting of five lanes or more, and from driving in the fast lane on the far left in streets of three or four lanes, whereas there is no prohibition for delivery bike drivers on streets consisting of two lanes or less.
