Khaberni - Two people died and two others went missing in two separate climbing accidents in New Zealand, according to the police today, Monday. In the first incident, police stated that two bodies were retrieved from the peak of "Sabre" in the lower southern part of the South Island, having been reported missing on Saturday.
The police stated in a report: "One of the individuals was found deceased but access to him was difficult due to deteriorating weather conditions on Saturday evening". The authorities returned on Sunday and found the second individual, also deceased.
The police said: "The two bodies were retrieved in a challenging and technical rescue operation", and one of the climbers was an Australian citizen, while the other had dual nationality from New Zealand and Canada, and was residing in Australia.
Sergeant Alon Griffith stated that the retrieval operation was complex and difficult, and at the same time, the police announced the disappearance of climbers on the country's highest mountain, Mount "Aoraki Mount Cook". The district chief of Aoraki, Vicky Walker, said that there are currently strong winds and rain in the area.
She added, "The police search and rescue teams and the Department of Conservation are working together and will search the mountain when weather conditions permit."
