Settlement in the West Bank Reaches Highest Level Since 2017

Khaberni - UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned that the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip is catastrophic, confirming that more than 80% of residential and public buildings have been destroyed or severely damaged.

Guterres, in a UN report, stated that repeated Israeli raids on Gaza continue to result in high numbers of civilian casualties and severe damage to infrastructure.

The Secretary-General expressed deep concern about the fragility of the security situation and the continuing violence that threatens the ceasefire agreement.

He pointed out that the improved entry of foodstuffs into the region has not sufficiently reflected on living conditions, noting that essential protein sources remain out of reach for most residents.

The Secretary-General emphasized the need to ensure full accountability for any "heinous crimes or gross violations of international law," affirming that the absence of accountability undermines the chances of achieving justice and stability.

With the onset of winter, hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians in the Gaza Strip live in tragic conditions, where basic life necessities are lacking in tents, while the occupying army continues to prevent the entry of mobile homes and necessary supplies for equipping shelters.

The ceasefire agreement in effect since 11 October last year stipulates the entry of aid into Gaza estimated at 600 trucks daily, but the Israeli occupation has not adhered to the agreement, allowing only up to 200 trucks a day at most.

Regarding the West Bank, Guterres condemned the Israeli colonial expansion, confirming that all settlements are "illegal, null and void, and constitute a blatant violation of international law".

He explained that the year 2025 witnessed the largest expansion of colonial plans since the start of UN monitoring.

He also warned of the escalating violence by settlers in the West Bank at a dangerous rate, especially during the olive harvest season, which further exacerbates tensions and undermines the chances for peace, according to his statements.

Guterres confirmed that the continuation of these policies and violations poses a direct threat to regional stability, calling for effective international action to stop the violence and ensure the protection of civilians and respect for international law.
