Khaberni - German orthopedist Lars Lorrer attributed the worsening of back pain in winter to several reasons, the foremost being weight gain, usually due to excessive eating and reduced physical activity, pointing out that among these reasons is also the lack of exposure to sunlight in winter, which negatively affects the hormonal system; as it causes deterioration in mood, increasing the risk of depression, which in turn makes the body more sensitive to pain, and thus exacerbates back pain. Cold also plays a role, albeit a minor one; as muscles become stiffer and may cramp in low temperatures.
To combat back pain during winter, the German orthopedist recommended the following measures: engaging in physical activities such as walking, cycling, and Pilates exercises, in addition to taking the stairs instead of using the elevator. Warmth helps to alleviate back pain; as it relaxes the muscles and improves blood circulation. The body can be warmed by taking a warm bath or sauna or by applying a hot water bottle or a heating pad on the back.
It is advisable to consult a doctor if the pain is very severe or if it persists for more than four to six weeks. This also applies if the pain extends to the legs or arms, as well as if there are sensory disturbances, paralysis, or instability in walking.
